Koinly Review

Buying crypto can take minutes. Finding the original purchase behind a sale years later can take considerably longer. Koinly addresses that second problem by collecting exchange and wallet records in one place.

Our BitcoinLink view: try Koinly when your history has become awkward to manage in a spreadsheet. The free starting point is particularly useful: you can inspect imported records before paying for a report.

About affiliate links

BitcoinLink may earn a commission when you use certain links on this site. This helps fund our editorial work. It does not make a service suitable for everyone: our reviews cover its benefits, limitations and conditions to understand before signing up.

What the software does

Koinly tracks transactions and prepares crypto tax reports using the selected settings. It offers exchange API connections, CSV uploads and imports from supported public blockchain addresses. Binance, Coinbase, Kraken and KuCoin appear among its integrations. Check the import method for your account; an API may need supplementary files to cover older periods.

DeFi, staking and NFT support can help organise a complex history. Review unusual transactions yourself. A successful sync confirms that data arrived, not that every classification is correct.

The check we would make first

Consider an asset purchased on one exchange, moved to a wallet and sold elsewhere. Importing only the sale can leave the acquisition cost missing. A transfer between your own accounts also needs to be recognised correctly.

Include earlier records, inspect transfer matches and compare balances with source statements. The useful part is being able to explain the figures, rather than merely producing a report.

Pricing by tax year

Public USD prices checked on 5 October 2026: Newbie costs $49 for 100 transactions; Hodler $99 for 1,000; Trader starts at $199 for 3,000, with higher capacities priced separately. The free account provides a preview; tax-report downloads require a paid plan.

A purchase covers a specified tax year. Do not assume it pays for every year imported. Check the transaction counter and final price in your account before buying. Deposits, withdrawals and trades can count, with grouping rules applied by Koinly.

Reports and data access

Check your tax residence, calculation method and report format. An American form is not a universal answer for international readers. Local filing can still require additional information or professional review.

Use read-only API permissions. Koinly does not need trading or withdrawal rights to analyse records, and you should never provide a wallet recovery phrase. Imported financial history remains sensitive even without access to funds.

Getting started

Create a free Koinly account through BitcoinLink. Set your country and relevant parameters, then add every account involved in the history, including exchanges you no longer use. Check known transactions, missing-data alerts, duplicate entries and internal transfers. Keep the original exports.

We would buy a report after this reconciliation. Complex DeFi activity can require manual work; for a few well-documented transactions, the benefit may be smaller. This review is based on public product information and documents, rather than a completed live tax return.

Start free with Koinly through BitcoinLink, reconcile your history and then choose the report you need.

Frequently asked questions

Is Koinly free?

Imports and previews are available free. Downloading tax reports requires a paid plan.

Should I import previous years?

Yes, where earlier purchases or transfers explain the transactions being calculated.

Can Koinly move my crypto?

Read-only imports do not require that permission. Check each API key yourself.

Does it replace an accountant?

It prepares records and reports. Difficult classifications and local filing requirements may need professional judgement.
