By the BitcoinLink editorial team — Information checked on October 5, 2026.
Kraken belongs on the shortlist if you are choosing your first crypto account. It has a long operating history, bank-funding options and a path from a simple purchase to an order book. For a BitcoinLink reader who wants to buy Bitcoin and send it to a personal wallet, those are practical advantages.
Our reservation is how you use it. A card purchase in Kraken and a spot order on Kraken Pro have different costs. Funds available for trading may also be temporarily unavailable for withdrawal. Those details affect your experience more than a large catalogue of coins.
Our view: Kraken is a serious candidate for beginners who compare the complete price and understand their chosen route. We would start with compatible bank funding, a spot purchase and a small first withdrawal.
Disclosure: BitcoinLink may earn commission through certain partner links. This assessment draws on checked documentation and editorial analysis; we do not claim to have conducted a deposit or withdrawal test.
What makes Kraken worth considering?
We want a clear answer to a simple question: how do you turn money into Bitcoin and take that Bitcoin out? Kraken provides those steps without requiring leverage.
You can learn gradually, using Kraken’s simple purchase flow before examining Kraken Pro’s orders and fees. “Pro” does not mean you must become a full-time trader. Still, we would not call Kraken the cheapest exchange by default. Its current entry-level schedule deserves comparison alongside funding options and account protection.
A brand from Bitcoin’s early years
Kraken was founded in 2011 and launched publicly in 2013. Its origin story describes Jesse Powell helping Mt. Gox after the 2011 incident and then setting out to build an exchange with stronger controls.
That background helps explain the brand’s emphasis on infrastructure, security and markets. Its services have expanded, but our question remains whether they make your purchase and withdrawal easier to understand. A long history helps you assess a record; it guarantees neither uptime nor an asset’s future value.
Availability: check residence and product
France and the European Economic Area
Kraken announced its Irish MiCA authorisation on June 25, 2025, followed by activation across all 30 EEA countries in August 2025. France’s AMF lists Payward Europe Solutions Limited, trading as Kraken, as authorised to provide crypto-asset services in France through the European passport.
Check the entity in your contract and the assets and products available to you. Crypto-asset authorisation does not make every product accessible to every person.
Readers outside Europe
English language support does not establish eligibility. The geographic restrictions checked for this article include Japan and Russia. US users should check their state and product conditions; other readers should check their actual residence and funding methods. Do not assume a euro funding example describes your local offer.
Kraken versus Kraken Pro
Kraken’s simple flow asks for an amount, displays a quote and lets you confirm. Recurring purchases can spread purchases over time without guaranteeing better returns.
Kraken Pro shows an order book and market or limit orders, with maker/taker pricing. A market order seeks immediate execution at available prices; a limit specifies your price without guaranteeing a fill. A limit order is not necessarily a maker order: it can take an existing order immediately. Where offered, post-only requests placement without immediate execution and may reject an order that would take liquidity.
Compare Bitcoin received for the same budget. Kraken Pro is also distinct from the Kraken+ subscription.
Kraken fees: examine the complete cost
Simple and recurring purchases
The checked schedule lists a 1% trading fee for instant and recurring trades, and 1.5% for custom orders in the Kraken purchase flow. The quote also includes a spread, and payment charges may apply.
We would not describe 1% as the complete cost. Compare the amount paid with the crypto received, then consider withdrawal.
Current Kraken Pro spot rates
The standard spot schedule checked on October 5, 2026 lists these initial tiers. The thresholds below are 30-day spot volume in USD; other qualifying measures can also determine your tier.
| 30-day spot volume, USD | Maker | Taker |
|---|---|---|
| From 0 | 0.40% | 0.80% |
| From 2,500 | 0.30% | 0.60% |
| From 10,000 | 0.22% | 0.38% |
Futures volume and assets on platform can qualify under their own thresholds. Instant purchases do not count towards the relevant spot-volume incentive. Some stablecoin, FX and specially priced pairs follow other schedules.
For a hypothetical €1,000 order at the first tier, trading fees alone would be €4 maker or €8 taker, excluding other costs and execution-price changes. Older references to 0.25% / 0.40% do not match the standard schedule verified here. We would not trade more or deposit extra assets solely to reach a cheaper tier.
What Kraken+ does and does not cover
Subject to eligibility, Kraken+ waives certain simple-flow trading fees up to $10,000 monthly volume or the local equivalent. Spreads and card-processing charges remain applicable. The benefit does not cover Kraken Pro spot or futures trading. Compare subscription cost and conditions with your actual usage before subscribing.
Funding and getting money back
Euro bank transfers
Several documented SEPA deposit routes have no Kraken deposit charge, a €1 minimum and advertised processing of zero to three business days or instant, depending on method. This is not a guarantee that every transfer is instant. Use account-displayed instructions, the requested reference and a compatible bank account in your name; check your bank’s own charges.
Several SEPA withdrawal routes list a €1 fee and €2 minimum. Other routes differ. Read the exact method rather than treating those figures as universal. Non-euro users should inspect the routes available locally.
Card payments and withdrawal holds
Cards can be convenient, but compare payment charges first. Some card or digital-wallet purchases can trigger a 72-hour withdrawal hold; ACH Plaid purchases have a documented seven-day hold.
The hold concerns funds associated with the transaction; trading can remain available. It is different from Bitcoin network confirmation time. If prompt withdrawal is your goal, consider funding restrictions before buying.
Security and the record
Protecting your account
Kraken provides passkeys, enhanced authentication, a Master Key and Global Settings Lock, which restricts sensitive setting changes. Understand recovery and unlocking before using those controls or making a large deposit. Use support accessed through your account and keep a case reference.
Reserves and incidents
Kraken publishes reserve verifications and lets users check inclusion of certain balances. Examine report date, covered assets and method. Proof of reserves is not a complete financial statement or insurance against every loss.
We would avoid saying “no incidents ever.” In June 2024, Kraken disclosed a fixed deposit-system vulnerability and said client assets had not been affected. That is Kraken’s statement about that event, not a future guarantee.
US regulatory matters
In February 2023, Kraken entities agreed to a $30 million SEC settlement concerning a staking programme without admitting or denying allegations. A separate platform case filed in November 2023 was the subject of a joint dismissal-with-prejudice filing announced by the SEC on March 27, 2025. The SEC said its decision did not assess the merits of those claims.
These are separate matters. They do not by themselves describe your current local contract or every available product.

How to open a Kraken account
- Confirm eligibility. You must be at least 18 and resident in a country accepted for the service.
- Create and activate the account. The documented route includes email, password and residence, followed by email activation. Follow the options shown.
- Prepare identity verification. Buying and selling require verification. Identity documents, personal details and potentially address evidence or additional checks may be requested. We would not promise approval within minutes.
- Set up security and recovery. Understand recovery before locking sensitive settings.
- Select funding and a purchase route. Compare locally available bank or card methods and Kraken versus Kraken Pro before confirming.
If the service suits you, have identification and funding ready so you can assess a purchase quote with the costs understood.

Your first Bitcoin withdrawal
We would begin with a limited amount that meets the displayed minimums. Choose a method supported by the receiving wallet and check the address, fee and net amount.
Bitcoin’s main chain and Lightning are not interchangeable address routes. If Lightning is offered, your wallet must support that payment. Check funding holds before blaming a delay on the network. Keep transaction details; understanding one withdrawal is more useful than opening several unnecessary products.
Staking, advanced products and welcome offers
Staking availability depends on country, asset and programme. Examine reward commissions, release periods and risks; advertised rewards are not a guaranteed savings-account return.
Margin and derivatives add funding and liquidation mechanisms. They are unnecessary for a spot Bitcoin purchase. Stocks or payment products elsewhere in the group are not automatically available to your account.
A welcome offer is an extra. Check validity, country, required transactions and the credit’s nature. We would not advertise one permanent universal bonus.
The BitcoinLink verdict
Kraken deserves consideration for a first account, especially if you want bank funding and to learn how to withdraw Bitcoin. Its confirmed European framework, account controls and choice of purchase interfaces are useful strengths.
Our main reservation is cost: entry-level Pro rates are higher than figures repeated in older reviews, while simple purchases can combine commission, spread and payment charges. Compare before buying.
If your residence is accepted and the conditions fit, Kraken is a sensible candidate. Prepare documents and funding, then keep the first goal focused: buy a small amount and understand withdrawal.
